Wow! Only 4 more days to go. I must admit that I feel energized by fasting, not to mention losing some weight, getting off caffeine, sugar, and meat. My head is clear and focused. Why don’t we do this more often? Good question!
I have recently been reading after some of the great revivalists: G.C. Cashwell, Evan Roberts and Smith Wigglesworth. All of them were energized in their walk with God by some type of fasting…either a water only fast or a Daniel fast much like what we are doing. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that, in my opinion, all serious Christians (is there any other kind?) should develop. In Matthew 6:16, Jesus says, “…WHEN you fast…”, not IF you fast. To me, this indicates that Jesus expects all of us as disciples to fast as a part of our relationship with Him in addition to studying the Bible, prayer, and sharing our faith.
The “brat” in us hates the thought that we might, after this fast is over, take our lives with God to another level and then begin to fast regularly on our own. Actually, that’s exactly what we need! How about starting with 3 days a month? The “brat” just wants you focused on the finish line this Sunday, to be glad that it’s over. Show him who’s boss! The God in you is!
Don’t misunderstand me, I am very proud of our whole church for taking it this far, and for finishing strong! I’m just challenging you to regularly experience the power of fasting in your life…not just once a year!
