Robb Thompson is one of the best Bible teachers of this generation. As I read his post this morning, I couldn’t help but think what it would mean for us as a Church if we could all take his words to heart. I have copied his post here on my blog today. Let’s learn from one of the BEST!
What Can We Learn From The San Antonio Spurs?
“So many times we promote the individual. Oh Lebron, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant. But then we leave out something that is really unique and special. And that’s TEAM, and TEAM basketball.” – Magic Johnson
The ball kept moving Thursday night—a beautiful, brilliant display of selflessness and discipline. You could practically see the Heat’s resolve crumbling under the pressure of all of those pretty passes.
The more San Antonio passed, the more Miami wilted, and soon the Spurs were cruising to another unfathomable rout, a 107-86 blowout that put them on the verge of a fifth championship.
When you sacrificially sow the seed of your life into the right people, you step into a realm of production, promotion, and provision that would be unavailable to you if you attempted to pursue success on your own.
This is what the Spurs are all about.
They have key relationships with one another on the court, which allows an immeasurable amount of accelerative energy to be harnessed.
The explosive momentum for increase that is produced when this energy is tapped is called synergy.
Let’s Discuss Three Arenas of Synergy…
If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.
There is great safety and protection in surrounding yourself with wise counsel. Because a mentor has gone down the road ahead of you, his guidance and direction are invaluable in avoiding decisions and situations that could destroy your future.
· Provision and Production.
And on a cold night, two under the same blanket can gain warmth from each other. But how can one be warm alone?
Again, a key to seeing increase in our lives is refusing to isolate ourselves, and joining forces with other productive, loyal people.
· Prevailing Power and Promotion
A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.
Winning does not happen alone.
If you are a successful person, you know that you did not get that way by yourself.
And this is exactly what the San Antonio Spurs have done, over and over and over again. Multiple championships, no real star power, just a TEAM.
Do they have great players? Yes.
Are any of their players top ten in the NBA? No. (of course this can be argued)
What do they have that no other team in the NBA comes close to having?
They have a coach that the players call “Pop,” his name is Gregg Popovich. And Pop is a mastermind coach. He has a great system. And all the players have bought into that system, that philosophy, that mindset.
All of the players and coaches on the Spurs, from top to bottom, have a great relationship with one another. They have an understanding. It’s not about who has the most individual points every night, it’s about winning, and winning TOGETHER.
Favor, promotion, and success burgeon within Godly relationships.
God never wanted us to walk alone. He actually wants us to walk with someone else, for then, if one of us has a problem, the other one can pick him up.
When I discovered this, I began to search for what I could do for others, and how I could help them fulfill their assignments.
What is your assignment?
You need other people to help you fulfill it. But, you can never reap a crop of having others help you fulfill your call, until you have first helped them fulfill their call.
Get active in helping someone else get over the finish line, and then you can get in line yourself.
But here is an interesting paradox: The one who just crossed over the finish line in life, is now able and willing to push you. He knows how to help you win! You don’t have to do it all on your own.
It’s amazingly simple! It’s so simple, that I had to back up to understand it!
These principles speak about serving other people—most people spend 23 hours and 55 minutes every day serving themselves.
But, be assured, you will not find any life, joy, or favor at all, until you stop focusing on your own interests and start doing what others need you to do.
Then, and only then, will you be able to activate the supernatural law of relational synergy.
