In Genesis 15:1-6, God makes a covenant with Abraham. This is Abraham’s first encounter with God about having an heir, and God tells him that his descendants are going to be as many as the stars in the sky! Abraham believed God when that Word was first revealed to him…and I too have found that when I first get a revelation, a Word from God for my future, I am full of faith! God’s going to do it! Do this in our church…Do this in our marriage Do this in our business…the sky’s the limit! Believing is easy at first…but we must also understand the timing of God.
It is really easy to believe when God first reveals to us the plan, but look at Abraham, 10 years later! In Gen 16:1, Sarah and Abraham both are getting impatient, because they did not understand one vital truth about the plan and purpose of God. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, had no children, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. Sarah told Abraham that since she didn’t have children yet, he should go in and have a baby with Hagar! This is how desperate they were to bring the plan of God to pass…and this how desperate we sometimes get when we try to bring the plan and purpose of God to pass ourselves! We are full of faith when we first get revelation, but then if things aren’t happening fast enough, we start getting weird and doing things to try to bring God’s Plan to pass ourselves! Abraham plants the “seed” in Hagar for “Ishmael” instead of Isaac. He ends up doing the wrong thing, with the wrong person, at the wrong time, and gets the wrong result! All because he didn’t understand ONE thing: that there is a SET TIME for God’s Plans to come to pass! Genesis 18: 12-14 tells us that God had an APPOINTED TIME for them! Why don’t things happen for us right now?Because God has an APPOINTED TIME! Once we understand this, we can always be at the right place at the right time! The story continues in Genesis 21:1-2 telling us that Sarah had Isaac at the SET TIME that God had spoken. Had Abraham and Sarah realized that God had a ‘set time’, they could have avoided Ishmael, which is still Israel’s problem today!
In Isaiah 46: 9-10 God declares the end from the beginning…NOT he declares the end at the end! When God speaks something it does NOT at all mean that we are going to always see it right then! HE spoke it from the beginning…WE will see it manifest at the end! “From ancient times I formed it, and NOW (years later!) I have brought it to pass!” (Isaiah 37:26).
I want to leave you with this: m the most important thing you can while you’re waiting for God’s Plan to manifest is found in Psalm 34:1, “I will bless the Lord at all times…His Praise will continually be in my mouth!” If Abraham and Sarah had done this, they would have had a completely different outcome! Praise Him now for His perfect appointed time!
